Windows XP Service Pack 3

Release Date: May 6, 2008

Windows XP Service Pack 3 is a service pack that is cumulative back to the last currently-supported service pack. This means that Windows XP Service Pack 3 contains all the fixes that were included with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). If you have already installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), you do not have to install Windows XP SP2.

Note You must have either Windows XP Service Pack 1a or Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed in order to install Windows XP Service Pack 3.

How to obtain

You can use Windows Update or the Microsoft Download Center to obtain Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).

Check for updates on Windows Update

1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
2. Click Express Install (Recommended).
3. If your computer qualifies, Windows XP SP3 will be one of the updates that are automatically selected. Click Install.
4. Review and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
Windows XP SP3 will be downloaded to your computer, and the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Setup Wizard will help you install it.

WHAT IS FIXED WITH SERVICE PACK 3?:

Note: Vista, both with and without SP1, performed notably slower than XP with SP3 in the test, taking over 80 seconds to complete the test, compared to the beta SP3-enhanced XP's 35 seconds.

If you use WINDOWS UPDATE (or MICROSOFT UPDATE) on your computer, you will be prompted to download and install Service Pack 3.  Those users on DIAL-UP may want to call me for assistance.

End of Support for Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows XP with SP1

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx

July 11, 2006 will bring a close to Extended Support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft will retire public and technical support, including security updates, by this date.

Existing support documents and content, however, will continue to be available through the Microsoft Support Product Solution Center Web site. This Web site will continue to host a wealth of previous How-to, Troubleshooting, and Configuration content for anyone who may need self-service.

Microsoft is retiring support for these products because they are outdated and can expose customers to security risks. We recommend that customers who are still running Windows 98 or Windows Me upgrade to a newer, more secure Microsoft operating system, such as Windows XP, as soon as possible.

Customers who upgrade to Windows XP report improved security, richer functionality, and increased productivity.

No Support for Windows 98

Windows Vista

Windows Vista is already updated with the new daylight saving time and no action is required. Click Next to update other programs.

Windows XP Home or Professional versions

To apply daylight saving time changes to your computer, you must install Windows XP Service Pack 2. This will require a restart of your computer.

Important
After your computer restarts, you must return to this DST guide at the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/DST2007

When you are asked again to select your operating system, select Service Pack 2 of your edition of Windows.

Click Next to continue to the Windows Update site and then click Express.

Windows 2000 Professional Edition with Service Pack 4 installed

Use the procedure below to update your system.

Microsoft has advised that Outlook users should update Windows and Outlook at the same time.
These no-longer-supported versions of Windows should use the tzedit.exe utility to reset the Daylight Time change dates for your time zone. Using tzedit.exe avoids the need for (risky!) registry modifications described elsewhere. (It makes them for you, correctly, under the covers.)

Download and install the Windows Time Zone Editor (Tzedit.exe).
